Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has welcomed news that the community organisation Locheilnet is set to receive £42,000 in funding from Community Broadband Scotland, an initiative delivered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
It is understood that Locheilnet will use the funding to upgrade its core network, deliver new masts at Treslaig and Tulloch and provide superfast broadband to a number of villages in Lochaber.
The organisation was established in 2012 by volunteers looking to provide reliable and fast broadband to some of the most remote communities in Lochaber.
Donald Cameron MSP said: “I am delighted that Locheilnet have received this extra support from Community Broadband Scotland and can continue to expand across Lochaber.
As a customer myself, I recognise the role that Locheilnet have played in delivering broadband to many rural and remote communities across Lochaber and I want to see them thrive so that more people can benefit.
At the recent elections, the Scottish Conservatives promised that 100% of properties and businesses would be able to access high speed broadband by 2020, however it is only by supporting local groups who provide such services that we will be able to achieve that target.”
